2025 Summer Internship Opportunity – Education and Community Arts Programming

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts complex located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is seeking an Education and Community Arts Programming Intern for the summer. Interns will work closely with Public Programs staff to implement a broad spectrum of programs, specifically at public events, workshops with Artists-in-Residence, and summer camps to engage visitors in the exhibitions and inspire creativity. Summer interns will have opportunities to develop educational resources for connecting to the Arts Center’s exhibitions and collection. Interns will assist visitors with hands-on opportunities and prepare materials and projects for the Social STUDIO, a community studio space for all visitors. Specific areas of focus depend on departmental needs and the intern’s skills and interests. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Assist with the implementation of activities in the Community Tent at Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series 
  • Assist with any summer residency engagement activities including curating participants, event set up and tear down and artist assistance 
  • Work collaboratively with the education team to develop and prepare educational resources for visitors of all ages, families, and school tours and classrooms
  • Assist with research, testing, and creating samples of hands-on projects for a wide range of ages and groups 
  • Facilitate visitors’ experience in the Social STUDIO.
  • Assist with the maintenance of studios, organization and inventory of education storage 
  • Prepare materials and assist instructors for summer camps and classes
  • Assist with hands-on workshops for groups of all ages, including people with memory loss.
  • Assist with implementation of education programs, like summer camps and classes: Mini Arts Day Camp, Arts Day Camp. 
  • Assist with Arts Center special events, including the Midsummer Festival of the Arts on July 19th and July 20th 
  • Prepare program packets, presentation and workshop materials as needed
  • Frequently move supplies weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Occasionally work in outdoor weather conditions 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
  • Ability to remain flexible within a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with many constituencies, including coworkers, department heads, Arts Center patrons, and artists-in-residence, in all modes, including written communication, video chat, email, phone, and in person
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong interest and experience in Museum Education and/or Community Arts
  • Familiarity with hands-on art making processes and various material knowledge
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills 
Qualifications 
  • Currently obtaining or have completed a degree in Museum or Community Education, Art History, Studio Art, Early Childhood, or K-12 Education. 
  • Valid driver's license
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. 
  • Familiarity with hands-on, visual art making processes, workshop planning.
  • Familiarity with video editing software beneficial. 
  • Ability to work with people of all ages, early childhood and youth experience beneficial. 
Summer 2025 Internship Dates

June 3-August 23, 2024 (may be flexible), 29 hours a week, including some nights/weekends. Some required dates include July 4, July 19th and 20th. This is a paid internship. Interns may also be eligible to receive course credit for this internship through their school, but it is the intern's responsibility to pursue this option through their school or university.
