GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to assist in the work involving maintenance and repair within a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and facility repair work. Employees perform routine work with some independence, and more difficult work under the direct guidance and supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds). Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
- Assists in repairs, preventative maintenance, and servicing of buildings and structures for the preservation of School District Facilities.
- Repairs and maintains building structures, school/office furniture, door hardware and locks, campus equipment locks, and campus equipment as directed.
- Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of single-phase and three-phase electrical systems.
- Maintains and repairs wooden structures, e.g., windows, roofs, walls, floors, bleachers, decks, desks, chairs, and fences.
- Maintains and upgrades facility grounds lawns and shrubbery, e.g., mows lawns, trains, hedges, and edges.
- Maintains cleanliness of facilities and repair tools and equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks and assists with the transportation of various supplies and materials.
- Operates a motor vehicle and other motor equipment.
- Performs various general maintenance and custodial tasks.
- Performs related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES - Ability to understand, follow, and direct written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and write English.
- Knowledge of the routine to moderately complex maintenance and repair of building facilities and equipment.
- Ability to repair routine to moderately complex aesthetic and structural problems.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, adding machines, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, and facsimile machines.
- Ability to operate various software programs, e.g., Excel, Access.
- Ability to operate various handheld and electric repair tools and equipment, e.g., screwdriver, hammer, pliers, level, various saws, electric drill, sewer snake, masonry tools, various jacks, generators, and welders.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and various motor equipment, e.g., stake body truck, dump truck, backhoe, forklift, tractors, and trailers.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 - 100 pounds).
- Ability to distinguish color and differentiate electrical circuitry (control and line); ability to hear; ability to smell.
- Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
- Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.
- Knowledge of basic School District work policies and guidelines; knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years of responsible experience in semi-skilled maintenance and facility repair work within a similar public/commercial environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
