Job Description

NeighborWorks Umpqua is a community-focused private, rural nonprofit organization working to enhance the lives of Oregon residents in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine Counties. NeighborWorks Umpqua's (NWU) Wealth Building Program aims to help low to moderate income families, with focused on providing financial services to individuals and communities that have historically faced economic barriers, to boost earnings, reduce expenses, and make appropriate financial decisions that lead to asset building through innovative approaches to service delivery.

NeighborWorks Umpqua is seeking a Financial Coach with bilingual capabilities preferred (Spanish/English) who will be responsible for outreach strategies designed to effectively serve the community's financial education needs. This position would provide direct services to low to moderate-income individuals who are enrolled as NeighborWorks Umpqua's (NWU) participants. 

Position Summary
The Financial Coach is responsible for coaching, education, and outreach strategies that are specific for Limited English Proficiency and English Proficient communities. The coach provides direct services too low to moderate-income individuals who are enrolled as NeighborWorks Umpqua's (NWU) participants. Financial counseling and coaching involve an ability to engage and motivate clients, a strong understanding of personal finances, and the ability to teach that knowledge to others. The financial coach is responsible for assisting clients in developing plans of action that are intended to help the client reach their goals and achieve financial stability. The financial coach is expected to focus services in a one-on-one counseling format. However, the coach might also conduct classes and workshops on topics such as budgeting, credit building, and banking products. The Financial Coach reports directly to the Director of Wealth Building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide one-on-one financial coaching

  • Teach clients about the value of NeighborWorks Umpqua's (NWU) services and relationship
  • Support Director and Manager in development, coordination, and facilitation of targeted outreach materials and events, screening for, and provision of technical assistance to low-moderate income individuals
  • Link clients to services that access innovative wealth building programming
  • Supports and enhances success and outcomes of participants
  • Increase the number of participants who successfully complete their savings and asset training goals
  • Assist clients in resolving current financial situations, while providing a wide lens on their financial health to shift the approach to proactive financial management
  • Work with clients to complete a very detailed financial assessment
  • Work with the client to document a budget and provide strategies for budget improvements
  • Access the clients credit report/score and provide strategies for credit building
  • Document the client’s balance sheet and provide strategies for increasing net worth
  • Develop plans of action and provide tools, resources, and accountability to the client to help them meet their goals
  • Understand other services offered by the organization and connect the clients to these other services
  • Complete and maintain project evaluation measurements
    • Case management and record keeping of participants and prospective participants
    • Track data related to clients and curriculum, including their progress and benchmarks
    • Engage participants who have completed programming in telling their stories and successes
  • Participation in regional and national asset building trainings, including presenting when appropriate
  • Support the development of grant writing with reporting activities (measurements and success stories) as needed
  • Travel to all areas where services are delivered or received.
The financial coach may conduct workshops as a means of outreach and education
  • The classes may be part of a larger programs and services offered by the Wealth Building Program , or may be occasional workshops to the public
  • Develop workshop materials or tailor existing materials to meet the needs of the community
  • Workshop topics should be relevant to the community, and may include topics such as: budgeting, savings, banking products, credit building, identity theft, and more.
Bilingual
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral in English and Spanish
  • Must additionally have excellent Spanish writing skills
  • Direct outreach to communities in Coos, Curry, Douglas and Josephine counties and support across NWU region
  • Adapt services for use in Spanish language

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Previous work experience with the low-income populations
  • Ability to provide financial counseling/coaching services
  • A good financial coach is able to relate well to both team members and clients
  • Internet and resource savvy
  • A strong understanding of personal finances, particularly in the areas of budgeting, asset building, and credit building
  • Supports a respectful and professional workplace environment that values teamwork and mutual respect
  • Experience working with individuals seeking financial education and support, including those from various economic backgrounds.
Specific requirements include:
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Proficient in the full Microsoft suite including, but not limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to become HUD certified in Financial Capability Education within 1 year of hire with demonstrated progress within the first three months of hire
  • Fluency in Spanish and English required to effectively communicate with clients.
  • Must be willing to travel; sometimes overnight
  • Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years related case management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Competency in business planning and a demonstrated ability to impart these skills to others.
  • Experience developing/delivering educational trainings
  • Previous work experience in the financial sector (banking, lending, insurance, investments)

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include those required for reading, writing, and typing. This position will be working primarily indoors and some of the time in an outdoor environment for events or clean up. From this movement, the employee will encounter varying temperatures. The noise level is low in the office environment.
