Summary Plans andmanages daily operation of Chrisholm Historic Farmstead, including animals, gardens, grounds, and the Augspurger House. Supervises assigned staff and volunteers to ensure quality, efficiency, best use of the resource, and the realization of organizational financial objectives.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities - Manages, trains, and participates in care and maintenance of domestic farm animals with the goal of program use.
- Provides or supervises routine daily care, health maintenance, and maintains records and other related information.
- Ensures safe public interface with animals. Reviews and approves acquisition and deposition of animals within organizational financial and programming objectives.
- Supports high-quality educational programs and events at the farm that attract visitors, fostering a deeper connection to agriculture and sustainability.
- Oversees design and safety of all livestock enclosures, fencing, and facilities.
- Oversees daily farm tasks to ensure efficiencies and to identify best practices and opportunities for improvements.
- Manages and participates in the development and maintenance of historic, herb, vegetable, field crop and demonstration gardens; fruit crops, apiary, and compost areas at Chrisholm Historic Farmstead. Manages holistic and generative farm practices.
- Recommends and/or applies fertilizer, herbicides, and or other chemicals according to manufacturer's recommendations and MetroParks policy.
- Responsible for supervision, coordination and/or implementation of regular maintenance cleaning and repairs of equipment and facilities related to animal care and demonstration areas.
- Makes recommendations regarding farm content for website, interpretive and informational signage, publications, and content for organizational marketing efforts.
- Responsible for supervising, training, and coordinating farm staff and volunteers in the completion of daily chores and other assigned farm tasks. Ensure all farm staff and volunteers work collaboratively with educators, partners, and Friends of Chrisholm to create and deliver the highest quality, hands-on programs.
- Oversees the Middletown Community Gardens: including the coordination of plot rentals, opening, and closing of the garden. Serves as the liaison between gardeners and MetroParks.
- Prepares, recommends, and maintains operating budgets. Requests and purchases supplies, services, and necessary equipment according to established policies. Works within MetroParks' cost recovery structure.
- Strengthen community ties through proactive engagement and outreach, building partnerships that support the farm's mission and extend its education impacts beyond the farm's boundaries.
- Represents MetroParks at community gatherings or other public meetings. Conducts meetings and/or makes presentations.
- Uses proper personal protective equipment, follows safety protocols, and uses tools and equipment appropriately to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Immediately reports safety concerns.
- Regularly uses a variety of hand and power tools.
- Operates licensed and non-licensed motor vehicles.
- Assists with programming and special events as assigned.
- Maintains accurate records of tasks performed including but not limited to time sheets, vehicle mileage, equipment usage, credit card reconciliation, etc.
- Accurately collects and deposits MetroParks fees in a timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Education and Experience: - Completion of at least two (2) years of study at an accredited college or university with coursework in agriculture, biology, education, recreation, natural resources, park administration or a closely related field of study resulting in the award of an associate degree or higher.
- A minimum of five (5) years farming experience.
- Candidates for the position shall have experience in animal husbandry that includes small farm animals and poultry, as well as experience with best gardening, landscaping and/or field cropping practices.
- Possession of a valid Ohio Department of Agriculture license as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator is required within the first six (6) months of employment and thereafter.
- Candidates for the position must be able to safely drive a truck and haul a trailer, operate farm equipment, and utilize common hand tools.
- A valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record allowing insurability by the MetroParks' vehicle insurance carrier. Employees may not have more than 4 total points (or equivalent penalty) on their driving record.
- Current basic first aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain this certification within six months of assumption of position.
- No history of felony convictions.

Work Environment, Schedule and Physical Demands Work Environment & Schedule: Employment in this position is full time that requires availability for a flexible schedule that may involve evenings, weekends, and holidays. Employees will supervise other assigned personnel. Ability to work in all outside weather conditions; wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold (below 32 F degrees) and extreme heat (above 90 F degrees). Ability to work around various outdoor contaminants, such as airborne and plant allergens. Some work assignments and tasks will require exposure to and work in inclement weather conditions.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to move about consistently across various terrain and utilize equipment for farm and animal care or sit consistently during a shift. Employees may be required to consistently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. This position frequently communicates with guests and must be able to exchange accurate information. Employees may occasionally move up to 50 pounds.
